Immediately south Montmartre, the 9ᵉ (neuviéme) arrondissement is rarely visited. It’s as if the broad and busy east – west roads that frame it – seedy and shabby on the northern fringe around Pigalle, handsome and expensive to the south, around the Opéra – form an invisible barricade. Lurking inside these limits, however, is a handsome, distinctly urban residential district with a powerful nineteenth – century atmosphere, especially around place St-Georges, and some excellent theatres and restaurants. The southernmost strip of the arrondissement, next to the Opéra and Grands Boulevards, is covered in the Grands Boulevards and Passages.
