Modern Architecture in the Septieme

The Septième is renowned for its grand state monuments and extravagant aristocratic mansions, which mostly date from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but you can also seek out a trio of the city’s most exciting Art Nouveau apartment buildings, the work of Jules Lavirotte at the turn of the nineteenth century. From the contemporary era, the new museum at Quai Branly is the most trumpeted representative, but hidden away nearby is a fascinating example of the postmodernist architecture of Christian de Portzamparc.

29 avenue Rapp (REP Pont de l’Alma). Art Nouveau to the extreme, complete with turbaned women adorning the sinewy doorway, and colourful glazed ceramic tiles. Designed by Jules Lavirotte in 1901.

3 square Rapp, off the avenue Rapp (RER Pont de l’Alma). More of Lavirotte’s extravagant Art Nouveau work, dating from 1900. There’s also a fine trails trompe loell alongside.

12 rue Sédillot (RER Pont de l’Alma). From studio of Lavirotte in 1899, featuring Art Nouveau and Art Deco elements, with superb dormers and wrought-iron balconies.

Conservatoire de Musique Erik Satie, 7 rue Jean-NIcot (M°Invalides). The architect Christian de Portzamparc plays with a half-peeled tube of a tower in this building dating (very much) from 1988.
