Over the River: Trocadero

Back on the western side of the Eiffel Tower area, the Trocadero quarter lies on the elevatd northern bank of the Seine. The river forms little barrier to a visit, however, as there’s picturesque above-ground metro line (line 6, which crosses the river on the Pont Bir-Hakeim, offering excellent views of the Eiffel Tower). The entire quartier is also connected to the Septieme by three fine bridges: the businesslike Pont de L’Alma, anchored beside the entrance to the Sewers; the graceful Passarelle Debilly, a peaceful footbridge leading from the Musee du Quai Branly to the Modernist Palais de Tokyo; and the handsome Pont d’Iena, which marches north under the very legs of the Tower towards the breathtakingly ugly Palais de Chaillot. Built in 1930s, Chaillot is now home to museums of naval history and anthropology, and will soon add the state-of-the-art Cite de l’ Architecture et du Patrimoine to the collection. To the east, the Palais de Tokyo houses the even more cutting-edge Site de Creation Contemporaine, and exhibition space for contemporary art, as well as the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the municipal-run museum of modern art. Between the two palaces, the superbly revamped Musee Guimet boasts a stunning display of Oriental and especially Buddhist art, while the Palais Galliera puts on high-quality shows of historical fashions in its role as the Musee de la Mode et du Costume.
